Surviving the Office Party

You’ll either be looking forward to the annual office Christmas party or trembling at the very thought. But instead of looking at it as that time of year when you get a little too tipsy and sing Bridget Jones-style on the karaoke, look upon it as an opportunity to demonstrate your fine social skills and excellent small-talk.

If the Debrett’s etiquette advisor is anything to go by, here are a few top tips…

Don’t panic, simply think before you speak. Provide a frame of reference when you introduce yourself, and have a list of potential topics to help you get a conversation going: current news, pop culture, and sports are all good places to start and try to avoid yes or no questions.

Mobile devices are a no, no and if you must take a call or check an email, step away from the party. Remember the boozing basics: avoid shots, alternate drinks with water and eat well… not hard if you’re heading to Chez Jules! Most important of all is to be thankful. Be sure to thank the host of your party, as well as any of the people who worked to plan the event… it is Christmas after all!
